Hyderabad: The Women’s Reservation Bill triggered a political row as BJP leaders criticised Congress over its defeat in the Lok Sabha.
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy termed the development a “dark day for India’s democracy.” In a post on X, he said the moment demanded unity for women’s empowerment, but instead exposed a lack of resolve.
He alleged that Congress denied women rightful representation by opposing the Bill. “India is watching. Our women are watching,” he said, warning of accountability.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar described April 17 as a “black day.” He accused Congress and its INDIA alliance partners of betraying women by blocking 33 per cent reservation.

Sanjay Kumar said the opposition celebrated after defeating the Bill. He alleged that Congress had a history of opposing women’s empowerment despite supporting the Bill earlier.
Telangana BJP president Ramchander Rao also criticised Congress. He said the party had repeatedly blocked the Bill and denied women their share in political representation.
However, Telangana Minister Danasari Seethakka rejected the allegations. She accused the BJP of linking the Bill with delimitation to delay its implementation.
She said the Centre had the numbers to pass the legislation independently. Instead, she alleged, the BJP turned it into a political exercise.
Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury also criticised the government. She said the failure of multiple Bills reflected public dissatisfaction and economic distress.
The exchange of accusations continued as both sides blamed each other over the fate of the Women’s Reservation Bill.
