Hyderabad: BRS MLC Sravan Dasoju on Sunday accused the Telangana government of endangering the Musi River catchment by proposing a garbage dumping yard at Bandaravirala in Rangareddy district. He alleged that the Bandaravirala dumpsite plan would threaten the health and livelihoods of people living in 16 surrounding villages.
Dasoju made the remarks while addressing a large protest and siege of the Rangareddy Collectorate led by former Ibrahimpatnam MLA Manchireddy Kishan Reddy. He questioned the government’s decision to convert 494 acres of government land into a dumping yard.
According to Dasoju, the proposed site falls within the Musi River catchment area. He warned that dumping garbage there would contaminate water flowing into the river. He said the government’s decision contradicted its stated commitment to spending thousands of crores on Musi rejuvenation.
“The government says it is investing thousands of crores to rejuvenate the Musi. At the same time, it is planning a dumpsite in the river’s catchment area. This is a contradiction that defies logic,” he said.
Bandaravirala dumpsite plan raises environmental concerns
Dasoju compared the proposal with the existing Jawaharnagar landfill. He alleged that residents living near the landfill had suffered serious environmental and health problems. He further claimed that the government was attempting to create “another Jawaharnagar” in a densely populated area near the Outer Ring Road.
He also alleged that the Bandaravirala dumpsite plan was being advanced without mandatory Gram Sabha approvals or environmental impact assessments. He termed the move anti-democratic and accused the Congress government of bypassing legal procedures despite opposition from local residents.
Dasoju criticised Ibrahimpatnam MLA Malreddy Ranga Reddy and Bhongir MLA Kumbham Anil Kumar Reddy. He alleged that both legislators had failed to support the affected villagers.
He said the agitation would continue under the leadership of K. Chandrashekar Rao and K. T. Rama Rao until the proposed dumping yard was withdrawn.
Thousands of villagers, including women, sarpanches, ward members and BRS workers, joined the protest and demanded that the government cancel the proposed Bandaravirala dumping yard.
