Hyderabad: Former minister V Srinivas Goud called for a nationwide movement demanding BC reservations based on population. He also sought a comprehensive caste census.
Goud made the demands at a protest near Gun Park in Hyderabad. The BC People’s Representatives Forum, BC Intellectuals Forum and BC Political Front organised the protest.
The programme followed a call from the All India OBC People’s Representatives Forum. Participants tore copies of government orders during the demonstration.
Goud said BC communities had not received full social justice despite nearly 80 years of independence. He claimed BCs continued to lag in education, employment and political representation.
According to Goud, accurate caste data was necessary to determine reservation policies. He said the absence of a comprehensive caste census had created legal challenges for BC reservations.
BC reservations demand focuses on caste data and representation
Goud said the British government conducted a caste census in 1931. He alleged that governments after independence neglected a comprehensive count of BC communities.
That, he claimed, had caused significant losses to the community. He also alleged that political parties treated BCs mainly as a vote bank.
The former minister said BC communities had also remained confined to traditional occupations. He sought adequate representation in political institutions, education and employment.
Goud demanded a comprehensive caste census for BC communities. He called for a transparent exercise without errors.
He said legal reservations in political, educational and employment sectors were necessary for social justice. A nationwide campaign on the issue was also needed, he said.
Political parties urged to support BC reservation demand
Goud urged all political parties to support the demand. He sought a bill in Parliament providing BC reservations based on population.
The former minister also called for an intensified parliamentary movement if necessary. He said the issue required action at the national level.
Referring to Telangana, Goud said the BRS had raised the issue in Parliament. He said the party had also extended its support to BC reservations.
He recalled that the Telangana Assembly had passed a resolution seeking reservations for BCs in legislative bodies. The resolution was sent to the Centre, he said.
Goud referred to Rahul Gandhi’s reported commitment to population-based reservations. He urged the Congress to move towards implementing that promise.
He also said BC communities would support the BJP if it conducted a comprehensive caste census. Such support, he said, would depend on steps for population-based reservations.
BC Intellectuals Forum convener Chiranjeevulu and BC Political Front chairman Balagoni Balaraju Goud attended the protest. BC Political Front convenor Ayili Venkanna Goud was also present.
Gowda Aikya Sadhana Samithi state president Ambala Narayana Goud attended the programme. BC leaders including S Durgaiah Goud also participated in the demonstration.
