Hyderabad: Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy directed officials to speed up Telangana paddy procurement and complete the process by the end of this month.
The Minister held a video conference review meeting on Sunday. Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Civil Supplies Commissioner Stephen Ravindra, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, ministers, collectors and senior officials attended the meeting.
During the review, Uttam Kumar Reddy said paddy cultivation covered 141 lakh metric tonnes across Telangana. He said the government fixed a target to procure 75 lakh metric tonnes at Minimum Support Price.
Officials established 8,575 procurement centres across the state. So far, authorities procured 51 lakh metric tonnes of paddy. The government also released Rs 8,749 crore towards MSP payments to farmers.
The Minister said officials made 21 crore gunny bags available at the field level. He directed authorities to immediately procure the remaining 8.5 lakh metric tonnes waiting at procurement centres.
Telangana paddy procurement review focuses on farmer welfare
Uttam Kumar Reddy instructed officials to set up check-posts in border districts. The government wants to prevent illegal inflow of paddy, maize and jowar from neighbouring states.
He also warned rice millers and middlemen against cheating farmers in the name of moisture cuts and quality deductions. Further, he directed officials to quickly upload procurement details through tabs to ensure faster payments.
According to the Minister, farmer welfare remained the government’s top priority. He also asked officials to counter false reports related to procurement operations.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka directed officials to increase the number of hamalis at procurement centres. He said the move would speed up lifting operations.
Bhatti Vikramarka said farmers earlier had to wait for months to receive payments. However, he said the government was now ensuring quicker transactions.
He also stressed the need to create awareness among farmers against burning agricultural waste. According to him, the measure would help control air pollution in urban areas.
Later, officials reviewed preparations for Women’s Welfare Week scheduled from May 25 to May 30 under the Praja Palana Pragathi Pranalika programme.
Women and Child Welfare Minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka, Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Women and Child Welfare Secretary Anita Ramachandran and Dana Kishore attended the meeting.
Officials discussed foundation stone ceremonies for Indira Mahila Shakti buildings and Anganwadi centres. They also reviewed awareness programmes on women’s safety and the POSH Act.
The meeting further discussed solar power plant initiatives, mandal federation meetings, Ullas programmes and Amma Mata-Anganwadi Bata activities.
