Hyderabad: BRS Deputy Floor Leader Harish Rao accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of failing to protect Telangana water rights amid alleged diversion of Krishna waters to Andhra Pradesh through the Veligonda Project.
In a statement on X on Monday, Harish Rao criticised the Congress government for its alleged silence on the issue.
He said Telangana faced growing irrigation challenges while Andhra Pradesh allegedly diverted Krishna water through Veligonda. He claimed the project lacked an established allocation and adequate flood flows.
Harish Rao accused the State government of failing to question the alleged diversion. He also said the government had failed to safeguard Telangana’s legitimate share of Krishna waters.
According to the BRS leader, the government’s silence had caused serious injustice to farmers across the State.
He pointed to water shortages in several major projects across Telangana’s Krishna basin. These included Bheema, Kalwakurthy, Nettampadu and Koilsagar.
Harish Rao said the shortages had left their ayacuts dependent on inadequate supplies. At the same time, he alleged that Krishna water flowed beyond the basin into Andhra Pradesh.
“On one side, Telangana’s own Krishna basin projects are struggling for water and farmers are suffering. On the other, Krishna waters are being diverted beyond the basin to Andhra Pradesh. Why is the Revanth Reddy government silent?” he asked.
Telangana water rights face questions over Veligonda
Harish Rao also referred to alleged diversion routes involving Malyala, Muchumarri and Pothireddypadu. He also named the Nagarjuna Sagar Right Canal and Veligonda.
He said these alleged diversions raised serious questions about the protection of Telangana water rights.
The BRS leader said farmers in Palamuru, Rangareddy and Nalgonda faced the impact of the situation. He also referred to farmers in other parts of Telangana.
Harish Rao accused the Chief Minister of allowing water meant for Telangana farmers to flow elsewhere. He demanded an explanation from Revanth Reddy over the alleged diversion.
The BRS leader also questioned the role of the Krishna River Management Board. He said the authority overseeing Krishna water utilisation should act when Telangana’s interests face an alleged threat.
Harish Rao asked who would protect Telangana if the KRMB failed to act when disputes affected the State’s water share.
He also sought intervention from Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy. Harish Rao urged Kishan Reddy to ensure that the KRMB takes necessary action.
The BRS leader specifically demanded steps to protect Telangana’s rightful share of Krishna waters. His remarks centred on the alleged Veligonda diversion and its impact on irrigation projects in Telangana.
