Hyderabad: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Telangana railway project connecting Secunderabad (Sanathnagar) to Wadi, sanctioning ₹5,012 crore for the construction of the 3rd and 4th lines. Officials said the project, cleared in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will strengthen railway infrastructure and improve connectivity between Telangana and Karnataka.
Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy welcomed the decision and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He said the project reflects the Centre’s continued commitment to improving railway infrastructure in the region.
Telangana railway project to improve travel and freight
The project will lay 173 km of new lines and finish within five years. Estimates show that nearly 47.34 lakh people in Telangana and Karnataka will benefit. The expansion will particularly support Kalaburagi district in Karnataka, identified as a backward area in need of infrastructure.
Authorities said the additional lines will cut train delays, ease congestion, and improve passenger services. Freight movement will also speed up, helping coal and goods reach markets more efficiently. The project will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction.
The Telangana railway project forms part of a larger national railway expansion. The Cabinet also approved multi-tracking projects worth ₹12,328 crore across five states, covering 565 km. These include the Desalpur–Hazipur–Luna route, Vayor–Lakhpat line, Bhagalpur–Jamalpur 3rd line, and Furkating–New Tinsukia doubling works. Officials said these projects will strengthen freight corridors, boost logistics, and support economic growth nationwide.
