Hyderabad: Telangana government has approved group insurance cover for 4,21,767 registered fishers for the 2026-27 financial year, Minister Vakiti Srihari said.
The scheme will cover registered fishers aged between 18 and 70 years. The government aims to strengthen their social security and livelihood protection through the programme.
Under the group insurance scheme, accidental death or permanent total disability will attract coverage of ₹5 lakh. Permanent partial disability will qualify for ₹2.5 lakh.
In addition, the policy will provide medical assistance of up to ₹25,000 for accidental hospitalisation. Eligible fishers will not have to bear any premium cost.
Each beneficiary will carry an insurance premium of ₹79.96. The Centre and State governments will share the premium in a 60:40 ratio.
Accordingly, the State government will contribute ₹21,34,79,673 towards its share of the premium, Srihari said. As a result, eligible fishers will face no financial burden for the insurance cover.
Group insurance strengthens financial protection for fishing families
The policy period began on June 1, 2026. Meanwhile, the Fisheries Department has taken steps to ensure continuous insurance coverage for every eligible registered fisher.
Srihari said the government had given the welfare and social security of fishing communities the highest priority. The scheme seeks to support families when fishers die or suffer permanent disabilities in accidents.
Furthermore, the minister said the government aimed to provide financial security to fishing families during difficult circumstances. He described the group insurance scheme as an important part of the government’s welfare measures for the community.
The government will continue working to provide comprehensive social security and financial protection to registered fishers and their families across Telangana, Srihari said.
