Telangana launches AI education programme in government schools

Hyderabad: The State government launched an AI education programme in government schools to prepare students for future technological needs.

The School Education Department partnered with Amazon Future Engineer and Pi Jam Foundation to implement the initiative across Telangana. The programme aims to train nearly 20 lakh students in artificial intelligence.

As part of the rollout, officials distributed 2,000 laptops to Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, IOE and CURE schools. Secretary Yogita Rana and Director of School Education Naveen Nicolas handed over the devices at MCR HRD Institute.

Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen classroom learning by improving digital infrastructure. Moreover, it seeks to equip students with practical technology skills.

Yogita Rana said the government is preparing students for a rapidly changing world. In addition, she emphasised that students should not only use technology but also understand how it works to solve real-life problems.

The department will teach AI concepts to students from Classes 5 to 9 using a digital learning curriculum developed by SCERT. Meanwhile, authorities trained around 28,000 teachers to deliver the programme effectively.

Students will also access a dedicated platform to practise concepts and enhance learning outcomes. Furthermore, the curriculum will include 20 to 25 hours of structured AI instruction each year.

The programme will integrate design thinking, computational thinking and digital citizenship into school education. Officials said the initiative could position Telangana as a model state in AI education.

Senior officials, including Samagra Shiksha representatives and Amazon partners, attended the programme.
