Hyderabad: State Rural Development Minister Dr Danasari Anasuya Seethakka urged the Centre to sanction more funds and road projects for Telangana under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
She sought special focus for remote tribal regions during the southern states regional PMGSY meeting in Hyderabad.
Union Rural Development Ministry Joint Secretary Atithi Singh, NRIDA Director General and senior officials from southern states attended the meeting.
Seethakka said the PMGSY scheme had improved access to education, healthcare, employment and markets in rural areas over the last 25 years.
She added that the scheme was connecting remote tribal hamlets with plain areas.
PMGSY funds sought for tribal road connectivity
The minister said the Centre earlier bore 100 per cent expenditure under the PMGSY scheme.
However, she pointed out that the revised policy now placed 40 per cent financial burden on states.
She urged the Centre to review the funding pattern and provide special relaxations to geographically difficult and economically backward states.
Further, Seethakka said forest and wildlife regulations were delaying road works in tribal regions such as Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Adilabad and Asifabad.
She requested the Centre to introduce suitable changes in forest and wildlife regulations to improve tribal development and rural connectivity.
The minister also said forest clearances were obstructing reconstruction and upgradation of damaged roads and culverts in several areas.
According to her, Telangana was giving high priority to rural infrastructure development.
She said the state was using modern technologies in road construction and maintenance.
Further, she added that Telangana was implementing the Hybrid Annuity Model for rural road maintenance.
Seethakka also urged the Centre to sanction more works under PMGSY-4.
She said additional projects would improve access to markets, schools, hospitals and development centres in rural Telangana.
Meanwhile, Union representatives responded positively to the requests raised by the state government.
Atithi Singh said the Centre would examine issues related to forest and wildlife regulations.
He added that officials would consider measures to speed up approvals and road works.
