CS Sanjay Jaju directs officials to strengthen traffic management, road safety
Hyderabad: Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to improve traffic management and road safety in Hyderabad and across the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
Jaju reviewed traffic congestion and road safety issues at a meeting with senior officials at the Secretariat on Thursday.
Officials discussed road safety, traffic signal maintenance and accident-prone locations. They also examined ways to create faster routes for emergency services.
The Chief Secretary directed officials to strengthen traffic signals across the State. The plan will cover cities, district headquarters, municipalities, urban areas and the ORR.
He asked the municipal, police, transport and other departments to work together to prevent accidents. He also directed them to prepare the Detailed Project Report at the earliest.
Officials must identify locations that require new signals. Jaju directed them to install the required systems during November and December.
Technology push for traffic management and road safety
Jaju said traffic management and road safety required coordinated action from several departments. He specifically referred to the police, transport, Roads & Buildings, municipal administration and urban development departments.
He also asked officials to explore an Integrated Traffic Data Platform. The proposed platform would bring together traffic data from different locations for analysis.
Similarly, Jaju suggested proposals for an independent system called TG-TMARS. The proposed Traffic Management and Road Safety system would focus on traffic management and road safety.
He also directed officials to modernise traffic signals and strengthen electronic enforcement. Road safety measures should follow Supreme Court guidelines, he said.
In addition, the Chief Secretary called for strict action against footpath encroachments.
Officials informed him that GHMC currently has 429 traffic signalling systems. Advanced signal control systems are already in use at these locations.
Jaju further directed officials to prepare a comprehensive plan for using Artificial Intelligence in traffic management. The technology should improve traffic flow and make road travel safer across Telangana.
He said technology should serve a wider purpose than detecting traffic violations. Instead, officials should use it to provide safer, faster and more convenient travel.
For this purpose, departments should adopt data-driven and technology-enabled solutions. Jaju also called for public-oriented measures to address traffic problems permanently.
Officials were asked to study the latest AI-based technologies for traffic management and road safety. They will also undertake pilot projects at suitable locations across the State.
Based on the results, the government will gradually expand successful initiatives across Telangana.
The meeting was attended by DGP C.V. Anand, Special Chief Secretary (Transport, Roads & Buildings) Vikas Raj, Transport Commissioner Ilambarthi, Malkajgiri Municipal Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar and other senior officials.
