BJP Telangana chief Ramchander Rao detained near Jadcherla over Jurala water protest
Hyderabad: BJP Telangana president N Ramchander Rao was detained by police near Jadcherla while travelling to meet farmers involved in the Jurala water protest. The farmers had demanded the release of irrigation water from the Jurala Project.
Police stopped Ramchander Rao on the way and took him into preventive custody. He strongly criticised the action and alleged that the Revanth Reddy government was suppressing opposition voices.
The BJP leader said he was travelling to meet farmers who had taken to the roads over drying crops. He questioned the decision to detain opposition leaders instead of addressing the farmers’ concerns.
Ramchander Rao alleged that the government was using the police to restrict opposition leaders. He also said such arrests would not stop public protests.
Jurala water protest focuses on irrigation for ayacut farmers
According to Ramchander Rao, the government should address the farmers’ demands instead of restricting their protests. He alleged that the administration was trying to silence the opposition through police action.
At the same time, he said the BJP would continue supporting farmers and raising their concerns at the ground level. He also criticised the detention of BJP leaders during the agitation.
The BJP state president demanded immediate release of irrigation water to prevent crops in the Jurala water protest area from drying up. He further sought the release of BJP leaders whom he said police had detained unlawfully.
Ramchander Rao continued to demand action on the irrigation water issue as farmers pressed for water from the Jurala Project.
