Physical literacy awareness must increase, says Pullela Gopichand

Hyderabad: Padma Bhushan awardee Pullela Gopichand stressed the need to increase awareness about Physical literacy during the “Youth and Sports Week–2026” programme at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium.

The Telangana Sports Department organised the events from May 18 to 23. The programme formed part of the 99-day “Praja Palana Pragathi Pranalika” action plan. The celebrations focused on youth empowerment and fitness promotion.

Speaking at the event, Gopichand said Physical literacy was important for every section of society. He said it should not remain limited to athletes alone. He explained that Physical literacy helped build healthy lifestyles, discipline, mental resilience and sportsmanship among youth.

However, he said sports continued to remain one of the major sectors bringing recognition to the country. He added that a healthy society supported balanced development in all sectors.

Physical literacy linked to sports participation

Meanwhile, Dr A. Sonibala Devi said the government had focused on improving sports infrastructure across the state. She said special attention was also being given to promoting sports in rural areas.

She stated that the “Youth and Sports Week–2026” programme aimed to improve awareness about physical health. In addition, it sought to expand social participation in sports. The programme also aimed to identify talented athletes from across the state.

Sports Authority deputy directors Sujatha and Raviteja attended the event. Gachibowli Stadium administrator Kannam Madhu, coaches and several young athletes also participated in the programme.
