Hyderabad: The Telangana government amended the Media Accreditation Rules, introducing changes to expand accreditation coverage and improve representation within media organisations.
Accordingly, the General Administration (I&PR) Department issued Government Order No.103 on January 24, 2026. The government approved the amendments after receiving proposals from the Information and Public Relations Department.
Under the revised Media Accreditation Rules, media managements must reserve 33 per cent of desk journalist posts for women. Therefore, the government made this provision mandatory. It also directed accreditation authorities to prioritise women journalists while granting accreditation.
Media Accreditation Rules amended to expand coverage
Meanwhile, the government replaced the term “Media Card” with “Accreditation Card” across all provisions. In addition, publications with circulation above 2.5 lakh will receive one extra accreditation card. This benefit applies to Sports, Culture and Films categories at the State level.
At the district level, publications with circulation between 75,001 and 2.5 lakh will get one additional accreditation card. Similarly, the card will apply to Sports, Culture or Films categories. Further, mandals with a population above 1.50 lakh will receive one extra accreditation card, subject to eligibility norms.
Additionally, the amendments replaced the term “Urdu big newspaper” with “Urdu daily newspaper”. Moreover, the government expanded the State Media Accreditation Committee. It added representatives from the Press Club, Hyderabad, and the Big Daily Newspaper category.
Finally, the government instructed the Special Commissioner, Information and Public Relations Department, to implement the amended rules. The order was issued in the name of the Governor of Telangana. It was signed by C.H. Priyanka, Special Secretary to the Government.
