Hyderabad: BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao urged the Supreme Court to initiate a suo motu Supreme Court probe into concerns surrounding the Election Commission of India. He said the poll panel faced a severe “crisis of confidence”.
Speaking to the media at Telangana Bhavan on Wednesday, Rama Rao stressed the ECI’s constitutional status. He said the institution must remain above suspicion. Rama Rao argued that no agency other than the Supreme Court had sufficient credibility to conduct an impartial inquiry.
“ECI is a constitutional body. We cannot rely on any agency other than the Supreme Court of India to conduct an inquiry,” he said.
Supreme Court probe sought over ECI concerns
Rama Rao asked the apex court to consider statements made by former Election Commissioners while examining concerns about the ECI. “The Supreme Court needs to take cognizance of what former Election Commissioners are saying and launch a suo motu inquiry. Hopefully, answers will emerge and the truth will prevail,” he said.
The BRS leader also recalled his party’s earlier representations to the Election Commission. He said he had previously led a BRS delegation to New Delhi. The delegation raised concerns with three Election Commissioners over the Special Intensive Revision process.
The party also submitted similar concerns during the Bihar elections. It asked the poll body to address rumours and clarify ambiguities surrounding voter roll revisions. In addition, the BRS sought greater transparency in the revision process.
Rama Rao said doubts about the ECI’s neutrality persisted despite those representations. He maintained that a Supreme Court probe could address the concerns and help restore public trust. He also said such scrutiny was necessary to protect core democratic principles.
