Hyderabad: Telangana Rakshana Sena chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha urged the Revanth Reddy government to build a copper dam linked to the Kaleshwaram project to support irrigation during drought conditions. She made the demand after visiting the Kannепalli pump house and inspecting the Godavari water flowing there. Kavitha claimed that 2 TMC of water could remain available during drought periods if the government built the proposed structure.
Kavitha said a copper dam spanning 93 metres could allow officials to lift water without depending on Medigadda. However, she accused Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy of ignoring the proposal. She appealed to the government to begin construction immediately and warned of further action if officials failed to respond.
She also warned that she would not remain silent if the government harmed farmers by withholding electricity or failing to lift water. Meanwhile, Kavitha said her party would continue to pressure the government until it addressed farmers’ irrigation needs. She added that a future TRS government would work to ensure greater benefits for farmers.
Kavitha copper dam demand linked to wider irrigation concerns
Kavitha said the Kaleshwaram project had created an additional ayacut of one lakh acres. She claimed that authorities had spent ₹93,000 crore on the project so far. According to her, another ₹50,000 crore would be needed to achieve its full irrigation potential.
She also said the drought situation had exposed shortcomings in both the BRS and Congress governments. Her remarks included criticism of the current administration’s handling of irrigation and water availability. The Kavitha copper dam demand was central to her call for improved water management.
Kavitha further raised concerns about the proposed Godavari–Cauvery river-linking project. She said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was pursuing a plan to link the rivers through Polavaram. She referred to a discussion between Naidu and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay in Vijayawada on the proposal.
However, Kavitha argued that Telangana would benefit more if the river-linking project began at Thupakulagudem. She urged Revanth Reddy to take special initiative to pursue that route and protect the state’s irrigation interests.
