Kavitha criticises BRS, Congress for ignoring Telangana martyrs

Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha criticised both BRS and Congress for failing to name even one government scheme after Telangana martyrs. She said the state emerged because of the sacrifices of hundreds of activists, yet successive governments did not honour them through official programmes.

Kavitha paid floral tributes to Srikanthachary at the LB Nagar junction on his death anniversary. During the event, she argued that the Congress government routinely used the names of Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh for its flagship schemes. In contrast, it did not attach Srikanthachary’s name to any welfare initiative.

Kavitha criticises BRS Congress on support for activists

She demanded that the Congress administration deliver on its promise of 250-square-yard plots, pensions and identity cards for movement participants. Kavitha urged Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to issue a clear announcement on December 9. Otherwise, she warned that activists would identify vacant state lands, distribute them among movement families and plant Jagruthi flags there.

According to her, 1,200 young people died during the Telangana agitation. She said the BRS government supported only a small number of families and many others still needed help. She added that the Congress, which came to power promising justice for activists, neglected them after forming the government.

Kavitha described LB Nagar as a symbolic centre of the movement. She noted that K. Chandrashekar Rao began his fast on November 29, the same day Srikanthachary attempted self-immolation. Despite efforts to save him, he died on December 3. She said the fast by KCR and the sacrifices of young activists sparked protest camps across villages.

She recalled that girls expressed dissent through Bonalu and Bathukamma celebrations, while university students intensified the agitation with widespread demonstrations. Kavitha said activists pursued the movement with determination and that Srikanthachary’s sacrifice could not be measured in words.
