Jeevan Reddy alleges delay in Rythu Bima payments to farmers

Hyderabad: Rythu Bima payments to the families of deceased farmers have been delayed, BRS leader and former minister Jeevan Reddy alleged. He accused the Congress government of trying to weaken the insurance scheme introduced during the previous BRS administration.

Addressing the media, Jeevan Reddy claimed that the families of 7,600 farmers who died due to various reasons had not received insurance benefits so far. He said reports suggested that the delay occurred because the government had not paid the insurance premium.

The BRS leader criticised the government over the issue. He said the administration should strengthen welfare measures instead of allowing existing schemes to disappear. He also alleged that the government was targeting the scheme because former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had introduced it.

Rythu Bima payments and paddy policy face criticism

Meanwhile, Jeevan Reddy said governments should introduce new welfare programmes while continuing successful schemes already in operation. According to him, authorities should not allow earlier initiatives to fade away.

The former minister also criticised the government’s paddy bonus policy. He claimed that the seven paddy varieties identified for bonus payments could reduce farmers’ yields and affect their incomes.

According to Jeevan Reddy, the selected varieties produce around 20 quintals per acre. He said several other paddy varieties yield nearly 30 quintals per acre. As a result, farmers cultivating the bonus-linked varieties could lose around 10 quintals per acre.

Further, he claimed that such a reduction could translate into a loss of nearly Rs 24,000 per acre. He urged the government to review the policy and ensure that Rythu Bima payments and other farmer welfare measures continue without disruption.
