HYDRAA launches restoration of four more lakes

Hyderabad: HYDRAA on Thursday launched Four lake restoration works worth ₹107 crore at four lakes in and around Hyderabad. The projects aim to reduce urban flooding, improve groundwater recharge and restore the water bodies.

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inaugurated the restoration works at Ibrahim Pedda Cheruvu in Ibrahim Bagh, Bhageerathamma Cheruvu in Puppalaguda, Kamuni Cheruvu in Moosapet and Kapra Cheruvu in Kapra. He performed Bhoomi Puja at Ibrahim Pedda Cheruvu and Kamuni Cheruvu before formally launching the works.

The restoration covers 97 acres at Ibrahim Pedda Cheruvu, 54 acres at Bhageerathamma Cheruvu, 48 acres at Kamuni Cheruvu and 112 acres at Kapra Cheruvu. The State Government allocated ₹107 crore for the four projects.

Four lake restoration aims to reduce flooding

Local residents attended the programmes and welcomed the restoration initiative. They thanked the State Government and HYDRAA for improving the lakes. They said the works would help address sewage-related problems, reduce mosquito breeding and improve the surrounding environment.

The HYDRAA Commissioner directed contractors to remove the accumulated silt from the lakes completely and eliminate foul odour. He said the restoration should strengthen flood management while increasing groundwater levels. He also called for an environmentally friendly ecosystem around the lakes.

Four lake restoration to include public amenities

Ranganath instructed officials to develop proper inlets and outlets to ensure the smooth flow of floodwater into and out of the lakes. He asked contractors to complete the projects without compromising quality and follow the standards adopted during the first phase, which covered six lakes.

He also directed officials to develop walkways, open gyms and children’s play areas around the lakes. These facilities will allow people of all age groups to use the spaces for recreation. In addition, he said the government was planning to introduce boating facilities at larger lakes through the Tourism Department. He urged local residents to support the restoration works and help ensure their successful completion.
