Hyderabad: In a moving display of courage and compassion, a woman from Hyderabad donated her brain-dead husband’s organs. This act saved the lives of five patients. The gesture, hailed as a selfless act of humanity, marked the 200th brain-dead donation under the Jeevandan programme in Telangana this year. Organ donation Hyderabad initiatives like these are crucial for increasing awareness.
Marri Srinivas, a 38-year-old railway electrician from Bhavani Nagar, Mallapur, suffered a fatal accident on December 13 while working atop a train. He fell from a height of 20 feet during mechanical work and was rushed to the Railway Hospital. Later, his family shifted him to a private hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment. On December 21 at 11:18 PM, doctors declared him brain dead. Such tragedies highlight the importance of organ donation programs in Hyderabad.
Despite her immense grief, his wife, Marri Rathna Kumari, consented to donate his kidneys, liver, heart, and lungs. This decision brought hope to five patients who urgently needed transplants. The donated organs included two kidneys, one liver, one heart, and a pair of lungs. This further emphasizes the impact organ donation has in Hyderabad.
Heart transported in 9 minutes through Hyderabad Green Channel
To ensure the donor heart reached the recipient in time, Hyderabad City Police created a ‘Green Channel’ for its transport. Organ donation efforts in Hyderabad reached new efficiency. The heart was moved from Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad to NIMS, Punjagutta—a distance of 8 km—in just 9 minutes.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar praised Rathna Kumari’s strength. He said she “saw immortality in death and brought light to others even in personal loss.” He also commended the doctors and traffic police for their swift coordination in making the life-saving transplant possible. This demonstrates the city’s commitment to organ donation Hyderabad initiatives.
Jeevandan Telangana expressed deep gratitude to the Marri family and acknowledged the milestone of 200 brain-dead donations in 2025. The programme continues its mission to promote awareness and facilitate organ donation across the state. Organ donation initiatives in Hyderabad remain a beacon of hope for many in need.
