Hyderabad: Hyderabad has officially emerged as a mega city following the merger of 27 municipalities into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). This is according to GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly established Rajendranagar and Golconda Zonal Commissioner offices on Friday, Karnan highlighted the city’s administrative expansion. In his presence, Anurag Jayanti assumed charge as Zonal Commissioner of Rajendranagar. Meanwhile, G. Mukunda Reddy took over as Zonal Commissioner of Golconda.
The Commissioner stated that the merger increased GHMC’s jurisdiction from 650 square kilometres to 2,053 square kilometres. To streamline governance across the expanded area, the State government had increased the number of GHMC wards from 150 to 300. Additionally, the zones were increased from six to twelve, and the circles from 30 to 60.
He added that new zones had been formed at Uppal, Quthbullapur, Malkajgiri, Shamshabad, Golconda, and Rajendranagar. The establishment of additional zonal and circle offices, he said, would not only improve accessibility to civic services. It would also speed up development works throughout the city.
