Excise constable attack shows drug mafia fearlessness: Kavitha

Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Tuesday alleged that drug and ganja mafias had grown fearless in the State, citing the brutal attack on an excise constable in Nizamabad as clear proof.

Earlier in the day, Kavitha visited the injured excise constable Soumya at NIMS Hospital. She also met the constable’s family members and expressed solidarity with them.

Subsequently, speaking to the media, Kavitha said the very fact that smugglers dared to attack an excise constable showed that criminals had no fear of the government. According to her, such attacks reflected a serious collapse of deterrence.

She said the government had promised to make Telangana drug-free. However, she alleged that ganja and drugs were now freely available even in villages. Moreover, she claimed that smugglers had begun targeting schoolchildren by bringing narcotics onto school premises.

Kavitha flags excise constable attack, seeks crackdown on drug mafia

As a result of unchecked drug circulation, Kavitha warned that women were increasingly becoming victims. In addition, she linked the spread of ganja and drugs to rising incidents of domestic violence across the State.

Therefore, she urged the government to wake up and act firmly against drug and ganja mafias. She said the administration must stop remaining indifferent and instead demonstrate its authority.

At the same time, Kavitha demanded that excise and forest personnel be provided with weapons. She pointed out that every excise constable undergoes firearm training, yet authorities fail to issue weapons.

If enforcement staff carried weapons, she said, smugglers would hesitate before launching attacks. Ultimately, she argued, arming an excise constable would restore fear among mafias and strengthen public safety.
