Hyderabad: BRS MLA T. Harish Rao on Tuesday demanded immediate action against Congress MLA Veerlapalli Shankar over alleged remarks wishing for former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s death. Harish Rao strongly condemned the alleged remarks and called for action, including cancellation of Shankar’s Assembly membership.
Speaking to the media alongside BRS legislators, the former minister questioned who had given anyone the right to publicly wish for a former Chief Minister’s death. He also referred to KCR’s position as Leader of the Opposition while questioning the alleged remarks.
Harish Rao seeks action against Congress MLA
Harish Rao alleged that Shankar had made the remarks at the instigation of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. He also accused the ruling party of lowering the standard of political discourse in Telangana.
He demanded that the Assembly Speaker immediately take up the issue. Moreover, he sought a resolution against Shankar and appropriate action over the alleged remarks. Harish Rao questioned why the Speaker had allegedly failed to take note of the comments against KCR.
He said KCR held the constitutional position of Leader of the Opposition. According to Harish Rao, that position ranked second only to the Chief Minister in the Assembly. The BRS leader also accused the Speaker of adopting a partisan approach. Therefore, he urged the Speaker to treat all 119 members of the Assembly equally.
Harish Rao said allowing such remarks to go unchecked went against democratic values. He consequently demanded that the Assembly initiate appropriate action against the Congress legislator.
