Hyderabad: A major drunk driving crackdown by Hyderabad and Cyberabad traffic police resulted in 768 motorists being booked during special enforcement drives conducted over the weekend and on May 29 and 30.
Cyberabad Traffic Police apprehended 293 offenders during a weekend special drive against drunken driving. The cases included 241 two-wheeler riders, 11 three-wheeler drivers, 39 four-wheeler drivers and two heavy vehicle operators.
Officials said 244 offenders recorded Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Another 26 offenders registered BAC levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml, while 23 offenders recorded levels ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.
All offenders will be produced before the court. Cyberabad Police warned that driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence and can attract stringent legal action.
Drunk driving crackdown brings strict penalties
Police stated that motorists who cause fatal accidents while driving in an intoxicated condition will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The offence carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.
Cyberabad Police also reported that 173 drunk driving cases were disposed of by courts between May 25 and May 30. Of these, four offenders received fines and jail terms, five were ordered to perform social service along with paying fines, and 164 were fined.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad Traffic Police booked 475 drivers during a two-day special drive conducted on May 29 and 30. The cases included 397 two-wheeler riders, 36 three-wheeler drivers and 42 four-wheeler and other vehicle drivers.
According to police, 90 offenders recorded BAC levels between 30 and 50, while 202 cases fell in the 51 to 100 range. Another 96 offenders recorded BAC levels between 101 and 150, while 43 registered levels between 151 and 200. Police also booked 24 cases in the 201 to 250 range, 11 cases in the 251 to 300 range and nine cases with BAC levels above 300.
Hyderabad Traffic Police said there would be zero tolerance towards drunken driving violations and that special enforcement drives would continue to improve road safety.
