Hyderabad: Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday directed officials and contractors to complete the Rs.18,400-crore J. Chokka Rao Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme by December 31, 2027, warning against further delays in execution.
The Minister conducted a detailed review of the project progress and instructed officials to speed up works on a war footing. He said the state government considered the irrigation project a top priority.
The project aims to provide irrigation support to 5.57 lakh acres across 10 districts in Telangana.
Devadula project deadline reviewed at Secretariat meeting
The review meeting took place in the Minister’s chambers at the Secretariat. Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Danasari Anasuya alias Seethakka attended the meeting along with MP Balaram Naik.
MLCs and MLAs from districts under the project command area also participated. Those present included Kadiam Srihari, Mandula Samuel, Murali Naik, K. R. Nagaraj, D. Madhav Reddy, G. Satyanarayana and Palla Rajewar Reddy.
Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, Irrigation Secretary E. Sridhar, government irrigation advisor Adityanath Das and senior engineers also attended the review.
The Minister conducted a package-wise assessment covering physical progress, financial status, land acquisition, pending distributary systems, contractor delays, court cases and funding requirements.
Devadula project deadline linked to irrigation expansion
Uttam Kumar Reddy described the Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme as one of Telangana’s most important irrigation projects.
He said the scheme was designed to lift 38.16 TMC water from the Godavari River to irrigate drought-prone upland regions in northern and eastern Telangana.
According to the Minister, the project would provide irrigation facilities to 5.57 lakh acres in Hanumakonda, Warangal, Jangaon, Yadadri Bhongir, Suryapet, Siddipet, Mahabubabad, Mulugu, Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Karimnagar districts.
Officials said the project was being implemented in three phases through 16 packages. Phase-I would irrigate 1.23 lakh acres, while Phase-II would cover 1.93 lakh acres. Phase-III would irrigate 2.39 lakh acres.
The Minister said completion of the project would also improve drinking water availability in several drought-prone villages across Telangana.
