CMC cites hygiene violations at Nawaabs Restaurant

Hyderabad: Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) Food Safety teams issued an improvement notice to Nawaabs Restaurant in Anjaiah Nagar after identifying multiple hygiene and food safety violations during an inspection conducted on June 18.

The inspection formed part of CMC’s routine food safety monitoring drive across Cyberabad. Officials assessed food handling practices, storage conditions and hygiene standards at the establishment.

Inspectors observed several positive practices during the visit. The restaurant maintained separate storage for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items. Raw meat was properly wrapped, and officials found no use of synthetic colours. The kitchen also used colour-coded chopping boards for food preparation.

Meanwhile, inspectors found stale food items, including meat, rice, noodles and chicken preparations, stored in freezers. Officials also observed improper butchering practices involving non-food-grade cutting surfaces.

Further, the inspection team reported water stagnation and slippery floors in food preparation areas. The restaurant did not have a hot water sanitation facility for cleaning utensils.

Officials found frozen prawns and prepared food items stored without proper labels or date markings. They also reported poor freezer hygiene, including foul odour and blood accumulation.

In addition, inspectors observed unhygienic cleaning cloths in food handling areas. Medical fitness records of food handlers and water testing reports were not available during the inspection. Minor pest activity was also detected in storage sections.

Following the inspection, CMC directed the management to immediately rectify the deficiencies and strengthen hygiene practices. The corporation issued directions for corrective action and will serve an improvement notice.

The restaurant scored 140 out of 196 in the hygiene assessment, translating to 71 per cent. CMC said it will continue regular inspections across Cyberabad to improve food safety standards and protect public health.
