Hyderabad: The Adilabad airport project moved a step closer to reality after district authorities reviewed land acquisition plans for the proposed joint-user defence and civil aviation airport.
District Collector Rajarshi Shah said the administration would complete the land acquisition process with full transparency. He made the remarks during a high-level review meeting attended by Adilabad MP Godam Nagesh, MLA Payal Shankar, Air Force officials and State Civil Aviation Director Bharat Reddy.
Before the meeting, officials and public representatives conducted a field inspection and micro-level survey to assess runway expansion requirements and other technical aspects of the project.
Adilabad airport project requires additional land
Rajarshi Shah said the state government had accelerated land acquisition efforts following directions from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. He stated that the government had already approved the acquisition of 700 acres for the Adilabad airport project.
In addition, authorities secured preliminary approval to allocate 1,500 acres for defence infrastructure, including an Air Training Institute. Officials also proposed allocating another 80 acres for runway expansion to support civil aviation operations.
The Collector said the administration would use geo-coordinates to ensure transparency throughout the acquisition process. Furthermore, he said officials would complete the exercise quickly and hand over the required land to the Defence Ministry and airport authorities. According to him, the arrival of both civil aviation and defence infrastructure would create a historic opportunity for the district.
Adilabad airport project discussed with Centre
MP Godam Nagesh said site inspections for the proposed airport had concluded successfully. He recalled that discussions on the Adilabad airport project took place in New Delhi earlier this year with Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Ram Mohan Naidu and G. Kishan Reddy.
Moreover, a high-level central team conducted a field inspection on May 15. Nagesh said the Centre and the state government were coordinating efforts to acquire the 1,500 acres sought by the Defence Ministry. He added that officials recently conducted a micro-level review using detailed maps to speed up the project.
Adilabad airport project raises hopes of regional growth
MLA Payal Shankar said the review meeting provided greater clarity on land acquisition requirements. He stated that the Adilabad airport project would require a total of 1,840 acres.
According to him, 360 acres already fall under Defence Ministry control, while authorities still need to acquire 80 acres for runway expansion. He said the process related to the remaining approvals was progressing rapidly. Furthermore, he announced that an additional meeting would take place in New Delhi under the leadership of the MP.
The proposed discussions are expected to involve the Chief Minister and Union ministers, including Rajnath Singh and G. Kishan Reddy. Payal Shankar expressed confidence that the airport would fulfil a long-standing aspiration of Adilabad residents and open new avenues for economic development.
