Hyderabad: The Telangana government has begun reviewing policy options and alternatives ahead of the proposed implementation of VB GRAM G from July 1.
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka held a high-level review meeting with senior officials at the Secretariat to assess the potential impact of the proposed law on the state.
Officials briefed the minister on key provisions of the proposed legislation.
They also explained its possible impact on rural employment, state finances and programme implementation.
VB GRAM G impact on rural employment discussed
During the meeting, officials compared the proposed framework with the existing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
They discussed provisions related to a 60-day pause in employment works during agricultural seasons.
In addition, they reviewed the proposed funding allocation mechanism and changes in the Centre-State cost-sharing ratio.
Officials also outlined alternatives available to the state to ensure uninterrupted employment opportunities for rural workers.
The discussions included the possibility of introducing a separate state-level employment guarantee law.
Further, officials examined options for meeting expenditure beyond centrally prescribed allocations.
They also reviewed the possibility of seeking changes to the proposed funding pattern.
Meanwhile, Seethakka directed officials to study the approaches adopted by Karnataka, Kerala and Jharkhand regarding the proposed legislation.
She asked them to examine issues related to rural employment rights, fiscal burden and federal principles.
The minister said the state government would protect the interests of rural workers and ensure that employment opportunities remain unaffected.
She noted that the employment guarantee programme serves as a vital source of livelihood for lakhs of rural families in Telangana.
Seethakka said the government would take all necessary measures to offset any adverse impact arising from the new law.
She added that the state would hold further consultations before arriving at a final decision.
