Hyderabad: A festive atmosphere is prevailing at ration shops across Telangana as the state government continues the phased distribution of new ration cards and the allocation of fine rice to eligible beneficiaries. The Public Distribution System (PDS) is witnessing a significant scale-up to accommodate a growing number of recipients.
In recent months, more than 11 lakh new beneficiaries have been included under the scheme. Additionally, 10.12 lakh names have been added to existing ration cards. This surge has pushed the total number of beneficiaries across Telangana beyond two crore. The government has also identified 31,000 new families as eligible for ration support.

The increasing demand is reflected in the sharp rise in rice supply. In January, the state distributed 1,79,175 tonnes of fine rice. By February, the figure edged up to 1,79,723 tonnes. In March, it rose slightly again to 1,80,005 tonnes, and now, in May, the total distribution has touched 1.80 million tonnes (18 lakh tonnes).
Officials attribute the spike to the state’s inclusive approach and ongoing efforts to ensure food security. The ration card initiative is also seen as a step toward strengthening welfare outreach, particularly to the economically weaker sections.

With the steady addition of new beneficiaries, the government is working to streamline logistics and ensure uninterrupted supply through ration depots. Monthly reviews are being conducted to match rising demand with appropriate allocations.
