Telangana legislators sports meet revived after 14 years at LB Stadium

Hyderabad: The Telangana legislators sports meet was revived after 14 years at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy leading participation alongside public representatives. The event marked the return of a long-discontinued tradition aimed at promoting fitness and sportsmanship among legislators.

Organisers held the “Telangana Legislators Sports & Cultural Meet – First Edition” under the theme “Fit Leaders – Fit State.” The stadium witnessed active participation from ministers, MLAs, MLCs and sportspersons.

Revanth Reddy joined multiple games during the event and encouraged colleagues to take part. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, along with leaders such as Gutha Sukender Reddy and Gaddam Prasad Kumar, also participated in large numbers.

Telangana legislators sports meet highlights stadium upgrade plans

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the Telangana legislators sports meet symbolised the revival of sporting culture. He noted that the stadium had a strong legacy, having hosted and trained internationally recognised athletes.

He announced plans to upgrade the stadium to international standards. In addition, he said the government would invest Rs 700 crore to develop sports infrastructure in Gachibowli.

Revanth Reddy revealed that the government aimed to position Gachibowli as a potential venue for the 2034 Olympics. He said works would begin within three months. He also stated that major sporting events over the next three years would take place there.

The Telangana legislators sports meet also highlighted the need to revive sporting excellence in the state. The Chief Minister recalled that Hyderabad contributed significantly to Indian football during the 1950s and 1960s.

He said India once secured fourth place in football, with seven players from Hyderabad. He added that sports such as hockey, football and cricket brought recognition to the region.

He said the government introduced a comprehensive sports policy to rebuild that legacy. Moreover, CM Cup competitions were launched from village to state level to identify grassroots talent.

The Telangana legislators sports meet also focused on global competitiveness in sports. Revanth Reddy said India struggled at entry levels in the Olympics despite its large population.

He compared this with countries like South Korea, which performed well due to strong systems and discipline. Therefore, he stressed the need for institutional support to improve performance.

To inspire youth, the government invited global football icon Lionel Messi to Hyderabad. He said the state would recognise and support talented sportspersons.

The event concluded with matches, including a football game in which the Chief Minister participated. His involvement energised both participants and spectators.
