Hyderabad: A reported Telangana Gurukul rat bite incident involving 14 girl students in Jangaon district led to a complaint before the NHRC. The incident reportedly occurred at a Telangana Social Welfare Girls’ Gurukul School in Palakurthi mandal on September 24.
According to the complaint, rats bit the students while they were sleeping. Subsequently, authorities took the affected students to a government hospital for treatment. The incident also raised concerns over sanitation, pest control and safety conditions at the residential school.
Moreover, questions arose over whether authorities promptly informed the parents of the affected students. National BC Dal president and advocate Dundra Kumara Swamy lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission seeking an inquiry.

Kumara Swamy sought an investigation into the incident and action against anyone found responsible for negligence after due inquiry. In addition, he urged the Telangana government to form a special committee to review safety conditions across Gurukul schools and residential hostels.
He asked the proposed committee to examine sanitation and pest-control measures at these institutions. Furthermore, Kumara Swamy called for regular inspections and stronger pest-control systems. He also sought stricter monitoring of hygiene and food-storage practices.
According to the complainant, these measures could help prevent similar incidents at residential educational institutions housing children.
