Telangana DGP directs low-performing units to improve new criminal law implementation

Hyderabad: Telangana DGP C.V. Anand directed low-performing police units to improve implementation of the new criminal laws and strengthen crime control. He also stressed better investigation quality and higher conviction rates.

Anand held a special review meeting with Police Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and other officials at the CID office on Thursday. He reviewed units that had recorded low scores in the State’s crime performance assessment.

The review covered six key areas, including case disposal, the sexual offence tracking system and speedy trials. Officials also reviewed FIR registration at crime scenes and the use of e-evidence.

Meanwhile, Anand directed police units to make greater use of Zero FIR and online charge-sheets. He also stressed e-evidence, e-summons, Nyayashruti and the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS).

The DGP said the national assessment of the new criminal laws gives 20 per cent weightage to administrative reforms. Operational efficiency carries 45 per cent, ICT application accounts for 25 per cent and integration carries 10 per cent.

New criminal laws review identifies low-performing police units

Telangana currently has a score of 60.15 in the assessment, Anand said. He said better implementation of the prescribed measures could substantially improve the State’s ranking.

Mulugu district secured the top position in Telangana. Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Ramagundam commissionerates followed it in the assessment.

Meanwhile, Anand directed Malkajgiri, Hyderabad, Nizamabad and Karimnagar commissionerates to improve their performance. The review also identified Mahabubnagar, GRP Secunderabad and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri among the lagging districts.

The DGP also asked police officials to use CCTNS data more effectively. He specifically stressed its use in tackling cybercrime, NDPS cases and habitual offenders.

In addition, Anand said police would provide special training wherever necessary. He also announced another video conference to assess progress on implementation of the new criminal laws.
