Hyderabad: The Telangana government and Amazon India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch Project Ashray Gig Workers, an initiative that will establish five air-conditioned rest stop cabins for delivery personnel and other gig workers at key locations across Hyderabad.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said Telangana values the contribution of gig workers. He said the Ashray Centres would give workers a place to rest, recuperate and recharge during their workday.
He added that gig workers play a vital role in supporting the economy. Moreover, he said the initiative would make Hyderabad a more worker-friendly city. The Chief Minister also congratulated Amazon India for partnering with the state government through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.
Project Ashray Gig Workers centres to offer essential facilities
Under the initiative, authorities will establish five rest stops at Kondapur, Tellapur, Patancheru, Bharathi Nagar and Chandanagar within the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation limits.
Amazon India will fully fund the construction and maintenance of the facilities. Additionally, the centres will remain open free of charge for gig workers across all platforms. They will offer air-conditioning, drinking water, seating, mobile charging points, free Wi-Fi and washroom access.
Officials signed the MoU in the presence of Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan, Cyberabad Municipal Commissioner Dr G. Srijana, IAS, and the Zonal Commissioner of Serilingampally.
Meanwhile, delivery driver Mohammad Rafi welcomed the initiative. He said the centres would provide much-needed access to drinking water, rest areas and charging facilities during long working hours.
Jayesh Ranjan said the project highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in improving urban infrastructure and working conditions. Meanwhile, Amazon India Director of Operations Salim Memon said the collaboration reflects the company’s commitment to providing delivery associates with safe and comfortable rest spaces.
