Hyderabad: Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan secured partial relief from the Supreme Court in the dispute over her rejected Rajya Sabha nomination from Madhya Pradesh.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear the Meenakshi Natarajan plea on Friday.
However, the court declined her request to halt the election process or withhold the declaration of results.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi urged the court to take up the matter on an urgent basis.
Appearing for Natarajan, he argued that a private complaint in Telangana triggered the controversy.
Meenakshi Natarajan plea challenges nomination rejection
Singhvi told the court that authorities had only issued a notice to Natarajan in the matter.
He said the concerned court had not yet taken cognisance of the complaint.
Further, he pointed out that investigators had not filed any chargesheet.
According to Natarajan’s legal team, the matter does not qualify as a criminal case at this stage.
Therefore, the Congress leader did not need to disclose the details in her nomination papers, they argued.
Singhvi also told the court that election rules do not mandate such disclosure at that stage.
The petition challenges the rejection of Natarajan’s nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Madhya Pradesh.
The Supreme Court will examine those arguments during Friday’s hearing.
