Singareni BESS project saves ₹25.66 lakh in four months

Hyderabad: The Singareni BESS project saved ₹25.66 lakh within four months by storing surplus solar power and using it later for operational needs.

Singareni established the Battery Energy Storage System at the 28 MW solar plant in Mandamarri. The company took up the project following directions from Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu.

Singareni spent ₹2.5 crore to install the 1 MW battery storage unit as an auxiliary facility to the solar plant. The system started operations in January this year.

The Singareni management said the project helped store excess solar power generated during the daytime. The company later used the stored energy for operational needs instead of sending it free of cost to the power grid.

Earlier, Singareni transferred surplus electricity from its in-house solar plants to the Telangana grid without receiving payment from the DISCOM under the power purchase agreement.

Singareni BESS project stores surplus solar power

Singareni operates solar plants with a combined capacity of 245.5 MW at eight locations across Telangana.

Out of the total capacity, 147 MW comes under Open Access Plants. Another 98.50 MW serves as in-house plants connected to the Telangana power grid.

The Mandamarri solar plant supplies electricity to mines and residential colonies in the Mandamarri and Srirampur areas. However, the plant continued to generate surplus electricity after meeting local demand.

To solve this issue, Singareni introduced the Singareni BESS project on an experimental basis.

Since January, the system stored and reused 3,35,485 surplus electricity units for operational activities.

As a result, the company achieved savings of ₹25,66,460 within four months.

Singareni BESS project may expand further

The management expressed satisfaction over the project’s performance and said the results highlighted the effectiveness of battery storage systems in renewable energy operations.

It added that Singareni was ready to implement similar projects in future in line with the State government’s renewable energy goals.
