Hyderabad: In a significant step toward sustainable energy, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has deployed Telangana’s first solar battery storage system (BESS) at its 28 MW Mandamarri solar plant. The 1 MW battery unit is set to be commissioned within the next three days.
The BESS enables storage of surplus solar energy that would otherwise be pushed into the grid without compensation. Once operational, it will allow Singareni to harness an additional 9.1 lakh units of solar power annually. This translates to savings of ₹70 lakh each year. The system has been set up at a cost of ₹2.73 crore.
SCCL eyes wider solar battery storage expansion
CMD N. Balaram confirmed that the successful trial run of this system will lead to additional installations across SCCL operations. He noted that this energy-saving initiative is part of the company’s broader push to improve renewable energy efficiency.
The Telangana government, in parallel, is also planning to launch large-scale battery energy storage systems with a combined capacity of up to 250 MW. These initiatives aim to bolster the state’s solar infrastructure. They also aim to reduce dependency on conventional power during peak demand.
To prevent unused solar power generated during the day from being supplied free of cost to the grid, Singareni is set to introduce—for the first time in the state—a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that stores surplus solar power and makes it available whenever required.
