Hyderabad: Advisor to the Telangana Government Mohammed Ali Shabbir has said the Congress is reviving the original vision behind the Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society (TMREIS), which he claimed suffered from neglect under the previous BRS administration.
Congress roots of TMREIS traced back to YSR era
Speaking at “Udaan 2025,” a felicitation event for TMREIS students who secured MBBS, BDS, and IIT admissions, Shabbir Ali asserted that the Congress laid the foundation for minority education in the state. He noted that former Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy initiated this model through Government Orders (GOs) starting in 2006.
He cited GO Ms. No. 34 (2006) and GOs Nos. 19 and 20 (2007), which established pre-matric and post-matric hostels, along with English-medium residential schools for students from religious minority communities across Telangana. “The BRS simply rebranded the Congress model without investing in the promised permanent infrastructure,” he said.
Revanth Reddy government expands TMREIS reach
Shabbir Ali shared that the current Congress government, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, has already identified 80 sites for constructing permanent TMREIS campuses. He lauded the achievements of this year’s students, including 36 free MBBS seats, two BDS seats, and multiple IIT admissions.
In less than a year, he noted, the Congress administration added 2,200 engineering seats in minority institutions, sanctioned a minority law college, and approved two pharmacy colleges. He emphasized that these steps aim to expand access and restore academic dignity.

Congress aims to rebuild trust and infrastructure
He criticized the BRS for the closure of over 80% of minority-run engineering and professional colleges during its rule. In contrast, the Congress, he said, is taking active steps to rebuild trust by improving infrastructure and academic outcomes.
Shabbir Ali praised TMREIS for providing a disciplined, safe, and inclusive environment that supports academics, leadership, and holistic growth. “These students are the pride of Telangana’s religious minority communities and prove what good policy can achieve,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming that the Congress remains committed to reviving the original YSR-era vision — ensuring permanent campuses, academic excellence, and equal educational opportunities for all.
