RTC union election schedule to be released, 11% fitment from July 1

Hyderabad: The Telangana government directed officials to release the RTC union election schedule and announced the implementation of 11 percent fitment under RPS-2021 for RTC employees from July 1, Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said during a high-level review meeting on the corporation’s progress.

Reviewing the performance of Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) after 30 months of the Congress government’s tenure, the Minister instructed officials to begin the process for recognition union elections after consulting the election authority.

He also directed officials to expedite pending compassionate appointments and complete the process for remaining eligible beneficiaries at the earliest. The Minister announced that the government would implement the 11 percent fitment promised during the RTC strike, providing relief to employees from July 1.

Ponnam Prabhakar said the government purchased 2,815 new buses between 2023 and 2026 at a cost of ₹1,078 crore. It also sanctioned two new depots in Eturnagaram and Peddapalli.

He said the Tarnaka RTC Hospital was upgraded from a primary healthcare facility into a super-speciality hospital. The corporation also provided 1,137 compassionate appointments under various schemes.

According to the Minister, TGSRTC currently operates 10,173 buses with a workforce of 38,128 employees. The fleet covers nearly 35 lakh kilometres daily and serves around 61 lakh passengers. He said government intervention helped reduce CSS arrears from ₹1,096.90 crore to ₹862 crore. PF dues also declined from ₹2,018.15 crore to ₹1,714.39 crore.

RTC union election schedule review includes infrastructure plans

The Minister directed officials to accelerate construction of the Nagar Kurnool and Peddapalli depots. He also asked them to complete the Mulugu bus station project quickly.

Furthermore, he instructed officials to prepare plans for foundation stone ceremonies for approved bus stations, including Vemulawada, Kathlapur, Huzurnagar, Kodad and Nagar Kurnool.

He ordered field inspections of bus stations in Mancherial, Chennur, Medak, Bellampalli, Parkal, Mulkanur, Dharmapuri and Makthal. Officials must submit reports on renovation and construction requirements. The Minister also sought a detailed report on the operation of 1,050 electric buses, including profitable and loss-making routes.

Welfare measures and future transport initiatives

Ponnam Prabhakar directed officials to study the impact of the Mahalakshmi scheme on women’s economic empowerment. He also sought feedback from women’s groups that own 553 buses leased to RTC.

The Minister instructed officials to provide a ₹1 crore cheque to the family of employee Shankar using contributions collected from employees. In addition, he directed them to provide a job to one family member and sanction an Indiramma house. He said the corporation had already settled 11 cases under the employee accident insurance scheme and provided ₹1 crore each to affected families.

The Minister also proposed a meeting of transport ministers, principal secretaries, commissioners and RTC managing directors from southern states. The meeting will focus on electric bus expansion, pollution control and EV policy implementation. RTC Managing Director Nagireddy and senior officials attended the review meeting.
