Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy advised farmers in Telangana to cultivate climate-resilient crops and adopt crop diversification in view of changing weather conditions.
He said the government’s objective was to create awareness among farmers and encourage sustainable farming practices.
The Chief Minister urged farmers to focus on commercial crops such as cotton, red gram, chilli and groundnut, which have strong market demand.
Climate-resilient crops can help tackle rainfall uncertainty
Revanth Reddy said the state could face deficient rainfall conditions this year due to the possible impact of El Niño.
He therefore advised farmers to choose crops that require less water instead of cultivating water-intensive paddy.
The Chief Minister recommended crops such as red gram, green gram, black gram, jowar, bajra and foxtail millet.
He said these crops can better withstand climate variability and help farmers reduce potential losses.
Meanwhile, he advised farmers in paddy-growing regions to assess rainfall conditions before sowing.
If adequate rainfall does not occur by July 15, farmers should opt for short-duration paddy varieties that mature within 125 days, he said.
Revanth Reddy also urged farmers to closely monitor weather conditions and follow advisories issued by the Agriculture Department.
He said farmers should adopt suitable cropping patterns to make agriculture more profitable and sustainable.
