Hyderabad: MLC nominations approval was sought by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who met Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan on Sunday and urged clearance of two pending nominations under the Governor’s quota.
The Chief Minister specifically requested approval for the names of Prof. Kodandaram and Mohammed Azharuddin. The proposal has been pending with the Raj Bhavan for some time.
Azharuddin, a former cricketer, is currently serving as a Minister despite not being a member of either House of the state legislature. His continuation in the Cabinet depends on meeting constitutional requirements within a fixed timeframe.
MLC nominations approval linked to Azharuddin deadline
As per constitutional provisions, a Minister must become a member of either the Legislative Assembly or Legislative Council within six months of taking oath. Azharuddin is set to complete six months in office by April 30.
If he fails to secure membership within this period, he will be required to step down from his ministerial post. Therefore, the MLC nominations approval has become crucial for his continuation in the Cabinet.
The file sent by the state government for filling MLC seats under the Governor’s quota includes Azharuddin’s name. Its clearance would enable issuance of a gazette notification before the deadline.
Officials indicated that the Chief Minister raised the matter with the Governor in view of the approaching cut-off date. The meeting also involved briefing the Governor on recent political developments linked to the nominations.
The MLC nominations approval remains pending, and its outcome is expected to determine Azharuddin’s immediate political future in the Telangana government.
