Governor approves MLC nominations, Azharuddin gets relief

Hyderabad: MLC nominations approval by Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla gave immediate relief to Mohammad Azharuddin and cleared the way for Professor Kodandaram to enter the Legislative Council.

The Governor approved the two names recommended by the state cabinet. As a result, the long-pending process moved towards closure after nearly three years. Officials said a gazette notification would follow shortly.

For Azharuddin, the decision proved critical. Under constitutional norms, he had to secure membership in either House within the deadline. He had to take oath as MLC before April 30. Otherwise, he risked losing his ministerial position.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy recently met the Governor and pushed for early approval. Following that meeting, the clearance removed uncertainty over Azharuddin’s continuation in the cabinet. Consequently, the decision brought relief to the government.

MLC nominations approval ends prolonged delay in Telangana

The state government sent both names to the Governor on August 30, 2025, in line with Supreme Court directions issued on August 13, 2025. However, the file remained pending as the new Governor assumed office and reviewed the matter.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court deferred further hearing after considering submissions from the Attorney General. In that window, the Governor approved the nominations, marking movement after prolonged inaction.

Kodandaram, known for his role as a public organisations leader, and former cricketer Azharuddin will now take oath as members of the Legislative Council. The development brought relief to the Congress government as the MLC nominations approval moved forward.
