Petrol diesel shortage fears grip Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad: Petrol diesel shortage fears spread across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Monday, as several fuel stations reported empty stocks amid panic buying.

Petrol pumps in multiple regions of Andhra Pradesh shut operations after running out of stock. “No Stock” boards appeared widely, while long queues formed at outlets that still had fuel.

In Telangana, including Hyderabad, several pumps closed temporarily. Others displayed similar notices, reflecting the growing petrol diesel shortage concerns.

Petrol diesel shortage linked to panic buying surge

Officials said the actual petrol diesel shortage was not as severe as perceived. However, rumours on social media triggered panic among motorists.

These messages claimed that fuel supplies would worsen in the coming days. As a result, people rushed to pumps and filled their tanks in large quantities.

Consequently, fuel sales tripled within two days. This sudden spike depleted available stocks at several outlets.

Officials said the surge in demand, rather than supply disruption, caused the current petrol diesel shortage situation.

At the same time, speculation over a possible fuel price hike added to public anxiety. Assembly elections were underway in five states, with polling nearing completion.

Reports suggested that the Centre might increase petrol and diesel prices after the elections. Therefore, some consumers rushed to buy fuel in advance.

There were also allegations that oil companies were limiting supply in anticipation of higher prices. Motorists suspected that companies planned to sell stock after a rate increase.

However, no official confirmation supported these claims. Still, such reports intensified petrol diesel shortage fears.

Another factor contributed to the situation. Commercial users reportedly began purchasing diesel from retail outlets.

This shift occurred due to limited availability in the commercial supply chain. As a result, retail fuel stations faced additional pressure.

Officials said public anxiety also played a major role. Many consumers bought more fuel than required, further straining supply.

The combined effect of panic buying, rumours and increased demand led to the current petrol diesel shortage across both states.
