Hyderabad: The second day of the Parliament winter session witnessed loud protests as opposition parties demanded an urgent debate on the Special Integrated Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 12 states and Union Territories. They sought permission through adjournment motions, but Speaker Om Birla rejected the request, which immediately triggered unrest in both Houses.
Opposition members raised slogans and attempted to move toward the Well with placards. The Speaker cautioned them several times, yet the protests intensified. As a result, MPs stepped into the Parliament premises and held a demonstration under opposition leadership. They alleged that the SIR process removed lakhs of eligible voters, especially from weaker sections, and claimed that such steps violated democratic rights. They also sought a debate on other public issues, including the recent terror attack in Delhi.
Parliament winter session protests intensify over SIR debate
The ruling side criticised the opposition’s agitation and said the SIR process fell under the Election Commission, not Parliament. It referred to earlier directions from the Speaker and argued that parliamentary rules did not permit a discussion on the issue.
Opposition members continued raising slogans in the Lok Sabha despite multiple appeals for calm. However, the disorder persisted, and Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House until noon.
