Hyderabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested a police sub-inspector in Nizamabad after catching him allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.7,000 to avoid implicating a youth in a criminal case.
The ACB caught Sub-Inspector of Police Chitannoju Bhaskara Chari of Bodhan Town Police Station red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe from a complainant on Wednesday.
According to ACB officials, the accused officer allegedly demanded money in exchange for an official favour. The officer had allegedly promised not to implicate the complainant’s brother’s son in a criminal case.
Officials said the accused initially demanded Rs.10,000. However, the amount was later reduced to Rs.7,000 after the complainant requested a lower payment.
Police SI bribe amount recovered by ACB
The ACB recovered the tainted amount of Rs.7,000 from the possession of the accused officer at his instance. Officials said the officer accepted undue advantage while performing his public duties dishonestly and improperly.
The identity of the complainant was withheld for security reasons.
ACB officials arrested the accused officer and prepared to produce him before the II Additional Special Judge for Trial of SPE and ACB Cases at Nampally in Hyderabad.
Police SI bribe case under investigation
The Anti-Corruption Bureau said the case remained under investigation. Officials continued further inquiry into the allegations and related aspects of the case.
The arrest added to recent ACB operations targeting corruption among public servants in Telangana.
