NIN study raises safety concerns over raw milk in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A study conducted by the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) raised concerns over raw milk safety after researchers detected harmful microbes in milk samples collected from Hyderabad and nearby regions.

Researchers conducted the study to examine the quality and safety of unboiled milk available in the city and surrounding areas. The team interacted with dairy farmers and milk vendors and tested milk, water and cattle feed samples in laboratories.

According to researchers, tests identified invisible harmful microbes in 42 raw milk samples collected from procurement centres, dairies and chilling units.

The study also detected aflatoxins in some cattle feed samples. However, researchers clarified that the toxin levels remained within the permissible limits prescribed in India.

Raw milk safety study warns against consuming unboiled milk

Researchers said some people consume raw milk to improve physical fitness. In addition, several food items, juices and milkshakes use unboiled milk during preparation.

However, the researchers warned that consuming raw milk could harm health because of the presence of dangerous microbes. They advised people to consume boiled milk instead of unprocessed milk.

The study highlighted the need for greater awareness on hygienic handling practices and food safety standards in milk supply systems.
