Hyderabad: A Mahbubabad farmer suicide was reported in Ayodhya village of Mahbubabad mandal on Sunday. Family members said 51-year-old Samakuri Venkanna had been struggling with mounting debt after repeated crop losses.
Venkanna made a living through farming, according to his family. Last year, he cultivated chilli on his three acres and another five acres that he had rented in the same village.
He borrowed Rs. 5 lakh from a bank for the cultivation. In addition, he borrowed Rs. 6 lakh from private individuals to meet his farming investment needs.
However, pests affected the chilli crop and the garden failed to produce the expected yield. The crop loss left Venkanna facing difficulties in repaying the loans he had taken for cultivation.
This year, he cultivated another two-acre field. He reportedly borrowed Rs. 14 lakh for crop investment and family needs, adding to his financial burden.
The situation worsened after the crop yield failed again. According to his family, Venkanna became frustrated after he could not see a way to repay the loans.
Mahbubabad farmer suicide case taken up by police
On Sunday, Venkanna died by suicide at his home. Police took up the case and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
His family members said the repeated crop losses and mounting loans had caused him severe financial distress. The Mahbubabad farmer suicide has left his family in grief.
Venkanna is survived by his wife, Padma, and two sons. Police are investigating the case based on the information available about the incident.
