Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro takeover plans came under sharp criticism from BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao, who alleged that the State government’s interest in Metro Rail stemmed from the valuable land assets attached to the project.
Addressing a meeting of key BRS leaders and workers in Serilingampally constituency, KTR claimed that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had focused his attention on Hyderabad Metro Rail properties. He alleged that every major initiative introduced by the Chief Minister carried hidden motives and claimed the Metro proposal followed the same pattern.
KTR said Metro Rail owned nearly 280 acres of land. He estimated the value of those assets at around Rs 30,000 crore. According to him, the government intended to take control of the Metro system and transfer a financial burden of about Rs 14,000 crore to the public.
Further, he alleged that the government could later sell the land after completing the takeover process. He claimed that individuals close to the ruling establishment could acquire those properties. KTR said future developments would reveal who purchased the land and how authorities handled the transactions.
Meanwhile, the BRS leader defended the Metro Rail expansion undertaken during the previous government. He said the K. Chandrashekar Rao administration developed a 72-kilometre Metro network and completed the tender process for additional expansion projects.
Hyderabad Metro takeover criticism linked to Airport Metro project
KTR also criticised the State government’s decision on the Airport Metro corridor. He said the previous government completed the tender process during 2023 and formally launched the project.
According to him, planners designed the corridor to connect Raidurg and the airport through Rajendranagar. They included three stations along the route and aimed to address future traffic growth while supporting Hyderabad’s expansion.
He alleged that the present government cancelled the Airport Metro project soon after assuming office. KTR questioned the decision and claimed the government never explained the reasons behind it.
Further, he argued that the project could have neared completion by now if the government had continued the work. He noted that the project did not require land acquisition and carried a two-year completion target.
According to KTR, planners aligned the route along the Outer Ring Road and included stations at Budvel and Narsingi. He said the project aimed to ease traffic congestion and support the city’s long-term growth.
KTR also criticised recent discussions between Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Metro Rail matters. He described the developments as political theatrics and claimed meaningful Metro expansion would resume only after a change in government.
