Hyderabad: BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao on Wednesday questioned the Telangana government over Kaleshwaram water release, asking whether Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy was giving priority to politics over farmers’ interests.
KTR alleged that large quantities of water were flowing wastefully at Medigadda while farmers struggled because of inadequate irrigation. Moreover, he accused the Congress government of ignoring the hardships faced by cultivators despite the availability of Godavari water.
Kaleshwaram water release sought for farmers
The BRS leader urged the government to lift Godavari water and provide irrigation to farmers without delay. Furthermore, he alleged that the government was targeting farmers because of political differences with former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. KTR asked the government to resolve its political disputes with the opposition instead of, as he alleged, making farmers suffer.
KTR said Telangana was facing below-normal rainfall because of El Niño conditions. Additionally, he claimed delayed rains had affected sowing and agricultural operations across the state. He alleged that the government was ignoring the situation despite farmers facing uncertainty over cultivation.
Moreover, KTR accused the Congress government of continuing its criticism of the Kaleshwaram project instead of utilising available water. He claimed the project had the potential to protect Telangana during periods of water scarcity. Finally, KTR urged the government to use the Kaleshwaram project to support farmers during the current agricultural season.
