HYDRAA launches Ramanthapur lake restoration project worth ₹19 crore

Hyderabad: HYDRAA has launched the Ramanthapur lake restoration project in Uppal constituency, with Commissioner A.V. Ranganath performing the groundbreaking ceremony and formally commencing the works on Thursday.

The restoration initiative forms part of HYDRAA’s efforts to strengthen flood mitigation measures and protect urban water bodies. Earlier, the agency completed restoration works on six lakes in the first phase. It is now restoring 14 more lakes in the second phase.

The Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu has a Full Tank Level (FTL) area of 30 acres. However, encroachments affected nearly 16 acres of the lake area. Officials said permanent structures occupied around 12 acres, while temporary sheds and huts covered another four acres.

HYDRAA cleared the temporary encroachments and brought more than 18 acres under its control for restoration activities.

Ramanthapur lake restoration project aims to reduce flooding

Officials plan to spend nearly ₹19 crore on the Ramanthapur lake restoration project.

Once completed, the restored lake is expected to reduce flood risks in surrounding localities. In addition, it will help improve groundwater levels and support environmental sustainability in the area.

Furthermore, officials believe the project will strengthen ecological balance and improve water retention capacity during the monsoon season.

Ramanthapur lake restoration project benefits local families

Residents living in temporary huts around the lake faced recurring hardships whenever the lake filled during heavy rains. Many families depended on daily wage labour and waste collection for their livelihoods.

To address their concerns, HYDRAA engaged directly with the residents and explained the government’s rehabilitation plan. Subsequently, the affected families cooperated with the restoration programme.

The government allotted double-bedroom houses to around 36 families. As a result, authorities improved their living conditions while creating space for lake restoration and expansion.

Officials said protecting lakes is essential not only for conserving water resources but also for securing the long-term environmental future of Hyderabad. The Ramanthapur lake restoration project marks another significant step in that direction.
