GHMC holds orientation for new SWM engineers under Swachh Bharat

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Wednesday conducted an orientation programme for newly appointed Deputy Executive Engineers and Assistant Engineers in the Solid Waste Management (SWM) wing. This was done under Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (2.0).

Held at the GHMC headquarters, the session aimed to brief new recruits on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2024, and recent amendments. It also addressed key operational challenges faced in field implementation.

Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation) Raghu Prasad chaired the session and stressed the need to reinforce sanitation systems. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of improving compliance with SWM protocols to enhance Hyderabad’s ranking in Swachh Survekshan 2025–26.

Anuradha, Officer on Special Duty to the GHMC control room, and the Superintending Engineer (SWM) encouraged the engineers to take active responsibility for improving sanitation. They also motivated them to improve solid waste practices across the city.

The orientation featured detailed presentations on key components of waste management, including the Swachh Survekshan 2025–26 toolkit and best practices in solid waste. It also covered construction & demolition waste handling, as well as bulk waste generator compliance.

Technical sessions were conducted by experts from the Swachh Bharat Mission Project Implementation Unit (PIU). In addition, representatives from M/s HiMSW Ltd. and M/s SSREC Ltd. participated.

The engineers were also given Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials to aid field-level sanitation initiatives. GHMC officials stated that the orientation is part of broader efforts to enhance institutional capacity. Moreover, it aims to promote effective delivery of Swachh Bharat Urban 2.0 goals in Hyderabad.
