Hyderabad: A gas cylinder blast triggered a major fire in an apartment at Alpine Heights Towers on Raj Bhavan Road, Somajiguda. This was under the Panjagutta police limits on Sunday evening.
According to police, the incident occurred in Flat No. 506 on the fifth floor. This was where 70-year-old Alika Mathur and her daughter Ashita Mathur, 45, reside. The fire broke out when they tried to light the stove for cooking. Suddenly, gas leaked, igniting flames. The two women ran outside in panic and alerted nearby residents about the blast.
Fire and police teams were immediately informed. Four fire engines were deployed, and after nearly three hours of effort, officials managed to bring the flames under control caused by the cylinder explosion.
Fire officials estimate ₹10 lakh loss in Somajiguda blaze
The fire intensified shortly after the initial outbreak when the gas cylinder exploded with a loud noise. This set off extensive flames. Household items, ceiling fans, and furniture were destroyed. The loud blast and thick smoke caused panic among neighbouring residents. As a result, they evacuated their flats.
Officials estimated the damage at over ₹10 lakh. Although the occupants escaped unhurt, a pet dog was left inside. It was later rescued safely by fire personnel after they spotted it hiding in a corner.
No injuries were reported. However, authorities expressed concern over possible lapses in fire safety provisions within the building. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway, said District Fire Officer Venkanna regarding the cylinder incident.
